Collecting and replacing old refrigerators in the favelas of São Paulo

Fair Recycling's success strategy is straightforward. Removing CO₂ from the atmosphere is complex and costly. Effective climate protection must address the issue at its source—by reducing current emissions. We accomplish this by recycling refrigerators in Brazil and extracting and safely destroying climate-damaging gases before they are released into the atmosphere.

Founded as a Spin-off. Supported by the Swiss Government.

As a spin-off of the SENS eRecycling foundation, we were able to leverage extensive expertise from the beginning. The Coop Genossenschaft and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (DEZA) also played a key role in supporting our pioneering project. Today, we know our approach works. Properly recycling end-of-life refrigeration equipment protects the environment and improves local living conditions, demonstrating sustainable action and social responsibility.

SWISS CHARTER Statements

Fair Recycling is a nonprofit foundation

Fair Recycling is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization based in Switzerland. Our mission is to combine effective climate protection with social impact by efficiently using resources, prioritizing purpose over profit.

In carbon credit trading, we prioritize impact over financial gain, considering both social and environmental factors.

Revenues generated from the sale of carbon credits are reinvested directly into operating, expanding, developing, and ensuring the quality of our climate protection project in Brazil.

Fair Recycling's project creates new jobs, ensures fair working conditions, and provides targeted training opportunities. Thus, it contributes not only to climate protection, but also to broader social development.

We guarantee that all contributions are utilized transparently, sustainably, and purposefully.

What the Green Cooling Star Stands For

The green cooling star in our logo represents not only the function of refrigeration, but also responsible resource management and climate protection. It serves as a reminder of the importance of using cooling appliances sustainably and ensuring they are disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.

Proper recycling of refrigeration equipment ensures that harmful CFC and HFC gases are destroyed permanently, preventing them from being released into the atmosphere.

Dr. Andreas Röthlisberger, Founder of the Fair Recycling Foundation

2008 - The foundation was established

Dr. Andreas Röthlisberger founded the Fair Recycling Foundation in 2008 with the goal of combining climate protection and recycling without losing sight of social aspects such as recycling education, fair working conditions, and economic viability.

Andreas explained his passion for climate protection and reducing CO2 emissions with the following words:

Imagine the atmosphere as a basin:

CO2 is constantly flowing in. The sources are varied: Natural events such as volcanic eruptions and human activities such as the use of fossil fuels are among them. Either way, the total amount in the atmosphere decreases.

Therefore, it is surprising that some climate protectors suddenly only advocate CCS as a way to reduce CO2. This view is also partially supported by the government, although it is neither logical nor objectively sustainable upon closer inspection. A fundamental principle of environmental protection, enshrined in Article 2, Paragraph 2 of the Environmental Protection Act, is to stop the source of emissions or reduce them at the source. This also applies unequivocally to CO2 emissions.

Our work over the past few years has shown that reducing CO2 through projects with high standards, such as our SWISS CHARTER is just as effective as CCS. Our compensation certificates are ecologically equivalent — and much cheaper.
