Dr Andreas Röthlisberger established the Fair Recycling Foundation in 2008 with the goal of combining climate protection and recycling without losing sight of social aspects such as recycling education, fair working conditions and economic viability.

Andreas explained his passion for climate protection and reducing CO₂ emissions in the following words:

CO₂ continuously enters the atmosphere from a variety of sources, including natural events such as volcanic eruptions and human activities such as the use of fossil fuels. At the same time, there are also natural and technological ways of removing CO₂ from the atmosphere, for example through plants that absorb carbon dioxide or technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS). From a climate perspective, it makes no difference whether we prevent CO₂ emissions at the source or remove CO₂ directly from the atmosphere. Both approaches reduce the overall concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
 

It is therefore surprising that some advocates of climate action now promote CCS as the only effective solution for reducing CO₂. This view is even supported in some areas of policymaking, despite the fact that it is neither logically consistent nor objectively justified. A fundamental principle of environmental protection, enshrined in Article 2, Paragraph 2 of the Swiss Environmental Protection Act, is to prevent or reduce emissions at their source. This principle applies equally to CO₂ emissions.
 

Our work over the past years has demonstrated that greenhouse gas reductions achieved through high-quality climate projects certified under standards such as SWISS CHARTER are just as effective as those achieved through CCS. Our carbon credits deliver the same environmental benefit while being significantly more cost-effective.
